It seems to me that if you work in SEO at the moment, all conversation is all about black and white animals at the moment, with Panda and now the Penguin update. Let’s talk about the Google Penguin Update (Penguin) and what it is all about. Penguin is about SEO’s and how we work. Typically, as an SEO we link build for our clients. That link building SEO’s do produces links that contain keyword rich anchor text. Typically the anchor text is the keyword phrase we are targeting for the clients, and the link goes to the page that is optimised for that Keyword Phrase.

What Google are saying in the Penguin update is that you can’t do that anymore. They are saying you need to maintain a normal distribution of anchor text links to a web site or you will be penalised. Penalties come with rankings with too many anchor text links to a particular page. Like all things SEO, it’s a balancing act.

Lined Media have always advocated a ‘spray’ approach to Link Building. Link building is carried out to a diverse range of keyword phrases contained in the anchor text that links to a diverse range of pages of our clients’ site.

Because of this slow and steady ‘Spray approach’, where we maintain a normalised link scape, no Lined Media clients have been affected by the Penguin (or Panda) update.

Google made a large change to its algorithm in rolled out between February and June 2011. The update, called the ‘Panda Update’ is designed to reduce the rankings for low quality sites, or sites that add little or no value to internet users. The results of this is a better experience for searchers, and more relevant result in the Google search results. So, how does the Panda Update affect what we do for our clients? Well it doesnt have any effect. The purpose of the Panda Update is to remove low quality content from the index of Google. This low quality content is produced by ruthless companies that gain revenue from traffic to their sites by generating useless content, non-sense articles or even duplicate content. As ethical SEO’s we have never adopted any of these questionable tactics. We give great advice, provide well thoughtout strategies for content generation and optimsiation.

To be honest, Google has helped out the corporate SEO community by removing the lower layer of crud and background content that has been blocking up the filters of the search world. For the last 10 years Lined Media founders have advocated generating top quality content as a strategy for SEO. We still advocate this today, and the benefits our clients recieve fromour Ethical SEO are enhanced, thanks to the Panda Update.
